Professional Christmas Decorating in Richmond, VA: What Makes a Home Look Designed
A star on top. A skirt on the bottom. A few ornaments hung on the very tips of the branches, and a garland that went straight from the box to the mantel. That look happens when there's no plan. Money with no plan still looks rushed, and a plan with quality materials looks intentional. I'll show you what the plan looks like.
I'm Dzigbodi, founder of Mawusi Events, a Richmond-based design and production company. I design every holiday project around one belief: a home should look like someone cared, from the curb to the coffee table.

How I got here
I didn't start in a design studio. I started at my own front door, with wreaths, railings, and archways for my family, my friends, and myself. Each time, I took an inspiration and made it unmistakably mine. Each time, I noticed the same thing: when neighbors slowed down and guests stopped in the doorway, the homeowner stood a little taller. That pride is what I design for. It turns out people will happily pay for it, which pleased me more than I expected.
What luxury means at Christmas
It has very little to do with what you spend. You can spend a fortune and still not put the pieces together with taste. Luxury is the experience...your guests walking in and feeling that real thought and time went into it, and you feeling that your time, money, and effort weren't wasted.
You express value through the effort you put into making people feel special. It's why a host sets the table with care and puts names on the place cards, and it's why your front door deserves the same attention.
What Separates Designed From Decorated
Once you know these three tells, you'll spot them everywhere.
Full, not skinny. A designed garland is never one strand straight from the box. I layer it, fluff it, and mix textures like Norfolk pine and magnolia leaves. On an arch, mantel, or wreath, various types picks, ribbons and ornaments in. Layering is what reads as expensive.
Finished, not flat. Bows get shaped and the wrinkles get smoothed out. Ornaments are spread from top to bottom instead of piling up in the bottom third (It's adorable when a child decorates the tree. It's just not a design strategy).
Cohesive, not copy-paste. Your tree, wreath, mantel, and staircase should talk to each other like one ecosystem, not five separate decisions. Every tree should also give people something to talk about from every angle. A few textured ornaments, layered ribbons made, or a unique piece in an unexpected spot can bring back a memory and start a conversation. Sparse can be a design choice, too. A crystal tree that looks like it's made of diamonds needs little more than a few glass ornaments, and piling on ribbon would overpower it. The tell isn't how much is on the tree. It's whether someone decided.
Why I use premium materials, and why you own them
You can spot the difference without a trained eye. Premium pieces have a shine that doesn't shed onto your floor. They're built properly, so they don't tear apart or fade in the sun. They're also exclusive, so your neighbor can't grab the same pieces at a big-box store and slap them on the door.
Even more importantly, they last. With proper installation, takedown, and storage somewhere dry and debris-free, they come out season after season. Many premium ornaments come pre-wired, so I secure them to the branches with without the need for additional attachments, or the need for hot glue. They don't fall, shatter, or pick up dings unnecessarily. Most clients store their pieces themselves, in any dry, debris-free space, and everything comes out ready for next season. If you'd rather not give up the room, I can store your pieces between seasons for an additional fee.
Better still, one collection can look different every year. Burgundy and cream this year, cream and gold next year. Swap magnolia leaves for frosted picks and the same garland goes from fall to winter. Rotate three palettes and you get three different Christmases from pieces you already own.
That's why I prefer that my clients own their materials. After year one, we design something new with what you already own.
A new home, a family visit, and a house worth slowing down for
A client had already started decorating. She'd moved into a new home, her family was coming for the first time in years, and she knew what she'd done wasn't the premium look she wanted. She invited me over, I complimented her work, and she asked for honest feedback. I gave her a few pointers.
When I came back for the consultation, she'd already applied them. She hired me for two wreaths and her outdoor decor: trees, a sleigh, and a garland for the inside. I didn't start from a blank slate. I chose materials, colors, and textures that complemented what she'd built, so every piece belonged to the same story. Good design doesn't always mean starting over.
She took lots of pictures. Her neighbors complimented the house, and she was still raving the next day. She kept it up until right before Valentine's Day, when she messaged me that it had to come down because the next holiday was coming. That's the moment I design for. Someone drives by and thinks, "She has this down."
Three ways to start
Not ready for the whole house? Start with the door. Every package is custom-designed, and you can grow into the next one in a later season.
The Welcome: an entry wreath, door or entry garland, and one styled focal point.
The Signature: a statement tree, mantel, staircase or banister garland, entry wreath, and door garland.
The Grand Holiday: whole-home design across four or more spaces such as statement tree(s), mantel, staircase or banister garland, entry wreath, and door garland, styling for one holiday gathering, a photo moment, or a priority install date.
Outdoors, I design railing and stair garlands, doorway arches, column and pillar wraps, and elaborate door wreaths. I don't do roofline lighting. I'm a designer, not a light installer.
How it works
We talk. Your first consultation is complimentary. You tell me your ideas and your spaces. Bring inspiration and pinterest board if you have it, including ideas that aren't on my website.
You get a realistic range. Based on your scope, I give you a budget range up front. If it works for you, we move forward.
Deposit, mood board, mock-up. A 50% deposit reserves your date and starts your design. I bring you options, like ornament kits and ribbon choices, and we refine the look together. Your approval of the mock-up is my go-ahead to purchase your materials, so the design is final at that point. Changing direction afterward, such as switching your color palette, is quoted separately because the materials have already been ordered. Additions are welcome up to two weeks before installation. After that, they carry a rush fee and depend on what I can source in time.
Balance due two weeks before installation. The remaining balance is due two weeks before your install date.
Install day. My team is sized to your project, so trees, mantels, staircases, and outdoor areas happen at once. We protect your floors, keep supplies organized, and clean and vacuum when we finish. I walk the team to make sure everyone is working in the same creative direction. Because we work in stages, a space may look unfinished halfway through, and that's normal. Then we walk through the result with you and touch up anything that needs it.
Takedown, if you'd like it. It's an add-on, priced by scope and most economical when booked with installation.
You don't have to be home. Give us access, or have a designated point of contact greet us and point us to the areas, and we'll take it from there. It helps if you clear those areas beforehand.
Why my pricing looks different
Some of the lower prices you'll see online are labor only: someone hanging what you bought yourself. My pricing covers custom design, premium materials sourced for your space, a full installation team, and pieces that stay yours. Year one is the largest investment because it includes the materials. In later seasons, we refresh the design and install with what you already own, and the cost comes down.
I'll give you a realistic range in our first conversation, so there are no surprises later. And I'll be direct: if your priority is the lowest possible price, we're probably not the right fit.
